What are the commonly used plywood glues?
WBP is the abbreviation of "Water Boiled Proof". "Water Boiled Proof" means weather resistance, boiling or steam resistance. If WBP glue is used for plywood or film faced plywood, this plywood can be used outdoors for a long time (weather resistance), waterproof (no problem in boiling water), moisture-proof (not afraid of boiling, let alone moisture-proof). Similar to the meaning of "MR glue", WBP glue is not the name of a certain glue. WBP is a property, feature or characteristic of a certain type of glue. If a glue has the characteristics of WBP (Water Boiled Proof, that is, weather resistance and boiling resistance), this glue can be called WBP glue.
A simple method to test the weather resistance of WBP plywood and WBP film faced plywood is the boiling test, which is to boil the sample in boiling water. If the sample does not delaminate after a long period of time in boiling water, we can say that the plywood has weather resistance and water boiling resistance.
Common WBP glues include melamine glue and phenolic glue. Generally speaking, ordinary melamine glue plywood can be kept in boiling water for about 4 to 8 hours without debonding. High quality melamine glue plywood can be kept in boiling water for more than 10 hours or even 20 hours without debonding. Ordinary phenolic glue plywood can be kept in boiling water for about 24 to 72 hours without debonding. The best phenolic glue is permanent glue, and the corresponding plywood is difficult to debond in boiling water.
It should be noted that the weather resistance and water boiling resistance of plywood not only depends on the quality of WBP glue, but also on the production process, core board quality, etc. Generally speaking, the glue used for outdoor plywood (such as marine plywood, film faced plywood, structural plywood, billboard plywood, etc.) is WBP weather-resistant and water boiling resistance glue. In fact, WBP weather-resistant and water boiling resistance glue is also often used for indoor plywood, such as furniture, kitchen, floor paving and other plywoods with high quality requirements and weather resistance and water boiling resistance.
