CHOOSE THE BOARD FIRST
One material. Different ways to build your product.
From painted cabinet doors to decorative furniture ranges, the right MDF specification starts with the part you will make. Choose the board type, nominal thickness and emission option, then add the finish and machining your design needs.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Board type | Thickness | Emission options | Delivered surface | Start with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard raw MDF | 2.5–35 mm | E0 / E1 / E2 | Unfaced; specify your painting, laminating or machining process. | Finished part, thickness, fixing detail and your workshop trial. |
| Moisture-resistant MDF | 9–25 mm | E0 / E1 | Unfaced; quote your intended coating or facing separately. | Humid-interior conditions, edge finish and the complete furniture component. |
| Fire-retardant MDF | 9–25 mm | E0 / E1 | Unfaced; identify any proposed decorative layer. | Required fire standard, classification, installed construction and supporting report. |
| Lightweight MDF | Quoted for your project | Required grade and method in the quotation | Unfaced or your requested component finish. | Target board weight, density, thickness and fitting trial. |
| Through-coloured MDF | Quoted for your project | Required grade and method in the quotation | Colour through the board; specify the final surface treatment. | Colour reference, visible cut edge, routed detail and finish. |
| Flexible MDF | Quoted for the formed construction | Required option for the selected construction | Facing and final finish specified around the curve. | Radius, bending direction, support and formed-part sample. |
Each emission option belongs to the specified board and test method. Tell us your destination market and document requirements when requesting a quotation. For fire-retardant MDF, agree the required classification and construction with the product documents.
SELECT A MANUFACTURING ROUTE
Choose the board that earns its place in your production.
Start with the finished component and the operations you want to carry out in your workshop. The board price, finishing steps, accepted-part yield and assembly all contribute to the cost of a saleable item.

| What you want to produce | Buying route | Reason to shortlist it | Compare before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Painted doors with routed profiles | Raw MDF in the required thickness; standard 2.5–35 mm or MR 9–25 mm for the specified humid-interior use. | Choose your own profile and coating system. A well-machined, prepared edge helps the face and profile finish together. | Cut the intended profile. Record edge preparation, sealer and paint consumption, coating appearance and fitting performance. |
| Repeat cabinet interiors and wardrobe ranges | Melamine faced MDF with the substrate, decor, texture and reverse identified. | A purchased decorative face brings the colour and texture into the board order. Your production plan can focus on cutting, edging and assembly. | Compare the full decor set, edge band, cut-face quality and hardware. Include edging and usable yield in the finished-part price. |
| Work surfaces with a specified laminate finish | HPL faced MDF: 12–25 mm finished panel, with 0.5–2 mm HPL. | Specify the laminate thickness, surface reference and complete face–substrate–reverse build-up for the working surface. | Check required surface-performance data, joints, edge treatment and finished thickness. Single-faced panels can use a melamine reverse. |
| Shaped decorative doors or natural wood interiors | PVC faced MDF for the proposed profile/film process, or veneered MDF for the selected wood finish. | Use the facing route that delivers the shape or visible material in your design. Identify whether you are purchasing full panels or processed components. | Trial the actual profile or veneer sequence, reverse, adhesive/finish process and adjoining components. |
| Visible routed colour or reduced component weight | Through-coloured MDF for coloured cut details; lightweight MDF for a defined weight brief. | Place the visible edge or handling target in the item specification. Select the proposed colour and board construction around that requirement. | Measure finished-component weight and fitting behaviour, or assess the routed colour under the final coating and lighting. |
| A fire-specified interior assembly | Fire-retardant MDF, 9–25 mm, with the required classification and installed construction. | Develop the board, decorative layer, supports and documentation together for the project specification. | Match report scope to the proposed thickness, facing, mounting and application. Keep the technical document reference on the order line. |
For painted MDF, include sanding, edge sealing and the complete coating cycle in your cost trial. The European Panel Federation’s edge-finishing guidance explains the roles of clean machining, preparation and compatible sealers. Its lacquer-finishing guidance also covers face and edge preparation.
For curved fronts, start with Flexible MDF and your forming radius, support and finish. For CNC profiles or drilled components, use MDF machining with the finished drawing and tool-path requirements.
BUILD THE FINISHED PANEL
Your decor. Your substrate. Both sides specified.
Create a coordinated cabinet, wardrobe or interior range by choosing the face, texture, reverse and edge treatment together. Specify the MDF substrate grade in its own field, and quote the finished panel thickness after adding the decorative layers.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Facing route | MDF substrate | Finished thickness | Face & reverse | Choose next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melamine faced MDF | Grade and emission option specified for the item | Quoted with the selected facing construction | Single or double sided; identify the reverse decor. | Black, white or woodgrain reference, texture, sheen and edge band. |
| HPL faced MDF | MDF grade selected for the application | 12–25 mm finished panel; HPL 0.5–2 mm | Single or double sided. Melamine reverse available for single-faced panels. | Decor and surface reference, HPL thickness, reverse and edge detail. |
| PVC faced MDF | MDF grade specified with the component | Quoted with film and reverse construction | Single or double sided; specify the reverse treatment. | Film reference, texture, sheen, edge/profile and processing scope. |
| Wood veneered MDF | MDF substrate grade specified for the order | Quoted with veneer, reverse and coating scope | Face veneer and reverse construction in the item schedule. | Wood species, grain matching, panel sequence and your finish reference. |
For a specification covering several facing materials, use Laminated MDF to develop the complete front–substrate–reverse construction. Use the dedicated facing page when you already know the surface you want to buy.
PLAN AROUND YOUR CUTTING LIST
Full sheets or the format your production needs.
- Regular MDF sheet sizes
- 1220 × 2440 · 2100 × 2800 mm
- MDF sheet sizes on request
- 1220 × 3050 · 1830 × 3660 · 1220 × 3660 mm
These formats are available for the MDF ranges; HPL faced MDF also follows this size schedule. Include the chosen board, facing, finished thickness, size and quantity on each order line. Machined components and door skins follow their drawing or model dimensions.
Share your cutting list if you need finished parts. Our cut-to-size plywood & MDF service brings component dimensions, quantities, edge requirements and packing references into the quotation.
Check sheet weight and your handling route.
For a quoted density of ρ kg/m³, raw-sheet mass is length × width × thickness in metres × ρ. The table below uses an 18 mm raw board. Multiply its volume by the density in your proposed board’s data to plan individual-sheet handling.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Regular format | Area | Raw-board volume | Calculated sheet mass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 2440 mm | 2.9768 m² | 0.0535824 m³ | 0.0535824 × ρ kg |
| 2100 × 2800 mm | 5.8800 m² | 0.1058400 m³ | 0.1058400 × ρ kg |
At the same thickness and density, a 2100 × 2800 sheet has about 1.98 times the raw-board mass of a 1220 × 2440 sheet. Check your saw or CNC bed, sheet loading and storage dimensions against both formats. A larger format may suit long parts or a multi-part nesting plan; compare the actual cutting layouts before choosing the order mix.
Faced-board mass also includes the decorative layers and adhesive. For receiving and container planning, request actual panel mass, sheets per pack, packaging mass and pack dimensions for each item. Use those figures in the mixed-order schedule.
