Marine plywood penetrations
A coated marine component includes more than its broad faces. Bring edges, holes and fittings into the sample so the builder can review the actual assembly and its protective system.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAIL
Does marine plywood mean the finished component is waterproof?
Marine plywood describes a panel category under a specified product standard; it does not define a complete watertight assembly. A buyer still needs to coordinate exposed edges, holes, joints, coatings and fittings for the actual component and service conditions.
Ask which marine-plywood standard and construction the supplier is offering. Keep that product description separate from the coating-system instructions. APA’s guidance on marine plywood also distinguishes the panel from decay-preservative treatment; do not assume the marine name provides every form of protection needed by the assembly.

Should holes be drilled before or after coating?

Identify the places that interrupt the coating
Mark service holes, fasteners, cut-outs and joints on the component drawing. State which operations happen before coating and which may be performed later. A newly drilled hole needs to be considered within the agreed protection and hardware detail.
Coordinate the selected resin or coating system with the builder and its manufacturer. Do not infer a universal hole size, resin recipe or cure schedule from the plywood name.
Trial the complete local detail
Choose a sample that contains the most demanding penetration or corner and the actual hardware where practical. Record panel identity, preparation and system references. Review the completed detail using the evaluation required for that component.
Keep any change to a fitting, coating or assembly sequence visible. If maintenance access matters, include it in the drawing review. The finished sample should explain how the accepted arrangement will be reproduced, inspected and discussed if a later repair is needed.
