Shelf panel selection: prepare the span and load brief
On this page

IN BRIEF

Shelf panel selection

A shelf comparison needs the complete supported component. Identify the span, loads, support arrangement and chosen panel before requesting design review or a representative evaluation.

  • Separate clear span from overall shelf length.
  • Describe concentrated and distributed loading.
  • Keep decorative requirements with the supported design.

UNDERSTAND THE DETAIL

What information is needed to assess shelf sag?

Shelf sag is the downward deflection of the loaded shelf. An assessment needs the clear span between supports, shelf depth and thickness, support arrangement, material properties, and the location and duration of the load. A material name alone cannot supply a safe span or load rating.

Measure clear span rather than substituting the cabinet’s outside width. Distinguish distributed contents, such as evenly arranged books, from concentrated objects. If the shelf has a front stiffener, back fixing or intermediate support, include that detail in the drawing used for the assessment.

Geometry
Clear span, depth, thickness and any openings or edge members.
Support
Shelf pins, continuous ledgers, fixed joints or a centre divider, with their actual positions.
Service requirement
Expected loading, acceptable deflection and the period or conditions over which it is evaluated.

Can a centre support solve the same problem as a thicker sheet?

It changes the support arrangement and should be evaluated as a revised design. Compare the complete options, including storage access, hardware and appearance. Have the responsible designer assess the selected arrangement before using it as a rated shelf system; this guide does not assign a universal maximum span.

Continue with evaluating shelf and cabinet fittings.

Describe the shelf the reviewer will assess

Show the distance between supports, the shelf depth and any overhang. Identify wall fixings, brackets, cabinet sides or other support details. Include openings, notches and edging that form part of the design. A panel thickness without those details does not describe the component.

State the intended contents and how they are arranged. A row of light display objects and one heavy item at the centre are different loading descriptions. Give the responsible designer the applicable project criteria and the data for the actual proposed panel.

Keep the material comparison tied to the design

If plywood and MDF are both considered, compare the specific grades and complete constructions. A general material label does not provide a universal load capacity. Record any revised thickness, reinforcement or support spacing as a separate design alternative.

Include the finish and exposed edges in the final review. An accepted structural arrangement may still require an appearance sample. Conversely, an attractive finish sample cannot settle a span or loading question. Keep both decisions connected to the same drawing revision.

WORKED BUYING EXAMPLE

Example: one shelf, two proposed support layouts

Illustrative planning example; values and quantities are not product specifications or quotations.

An illustrative shelf has an overall length of 900 mm. The buyer is considering end supports only or an additional centre support. No safe load is assigned by this example.

What this means for the order

The quotation should describe the panel for the reviewed arrangement. If a purchasing alternative changes the panel or a workshop change removes a support, return that change to the design review before treating the earlier acceptance as current.

Keep these details with your inquiry

  1. Overall dimensions, clear spans and overhangs.
  2. Loads, positions and relevant service requirements.
  3. Support, fixing and reinforcement details.
  4. Selected panel data, drawing revision and appearance reference.

Review the relevant product guide and prepare your inquiry files.

Questions buyers ask

Can I select thickness from a generic shelf chart?

Use data and methods appropriate to the actual panel and support arrangement. Have the component reviewed where the application requires design verification.

Does a stronger-looking core settle the choice?

Appearance does not establish the required properties. Connect the proposed construction to appropriate product data and the component design.
